Emily May Gadd

The examination of the human body, what lies beneath and on the surface and discovering a sense of identity through the medium of screen printing is at the forefront of my practice: Exploring different ways of seeing my true self  as a way of self-healing, opening new doors of acceptance.

Utilising the screen-printing process, I could create layers with paint, echoing the layers of skin produced by the human body and its ability to self heal.  I am also motivated by the inspiring ability of the human mind and how we build up a mental immunity through layers of pain and trauma. The colours chosen are an intentional part of my work. A black and white image posing as an almost unblemished female figure whereas the second image represents natural skin pigment against the white symbols that are depicting my physical and unique scar shapes; making the invisible visible.

Creating intimate artwork is part of my personal journey within the art world; communicating strength, healing, and inner freedom and encouraging confidence in both beauty and reality.
