Ethan Murphy

My interest regarding my own works is currently satisfied with the idea of painting as a medium that is as visceral as it is material: I am exploring the effects of a singular painting on the viewer’s imagination and how, if worked towards correctly, an audience’s own mental imagery and psyche are as important as the work itself. 
This practice has been an examination of the philosophical monisms inspired by the Materialists and the Idealists: two schools of thought that deal with origin and have taken contrary stances; each grappling with the connection between our literal, physical world and the world of the inner-self. 
Whilst my painting wishes to be a pleasure to look at regarding its aesthetic, it must equally serve the purpose of a novel or film: the information from the painting will be a constant and developing narrative that uses tools, devices and topics of widely acclaimed interest to grasp the viewer’s attention and mind - in hope of turning the visual imagination into a cinematic screen of sorts.
