Lydia Durham

The work I create is incredibly personal. I am interested in expressing my experiences through drawing and painting, taking inspiration from both human and natural environments. Human sensitivity is my sole focus, and I like to present this visually through figurative and metaphorical imagery. I believe in the beauty of deep and insightful thinking, which is why my art practice is a gradual process of finding what it is I truly want to say.

The main aim of my work is for it to resonate with those who feel like no one else understands. I want to be able to provide a sense of calm relief, that someone else feels the way you do. Recently, my practice has visualised the events of the past year, particularly in regards to the emotional effects of the pandemic. I have produced a variety of pencil and oil pastel drawings, alongside a collective animation called ‘Thoughts in a Pandemic’, that portray the quiet moments of introspection that we all have felt during the lockdown period. This body of work has allowed me to emphasise people’s revaluation of their lives, hoping to find what truly matters.

I am interested in the subtle nuances of the human condition, and the days that pass that did not feel like days at all. My practice is ever-evolving, just as I am, and I look forward to the ways in which we grow.
